Netted

Netted lo res

In post-apocalyptic Maine, safety is the highest priority. Every citizen is Netted, their thoughts monitored for homicidal, lawless impulses. But being Netted can cause as many problems as it solves.

Years after everyone thought they'd died, a young family are discovered, safe and sound, living in the wilderness. As their delighted relations race to pick them up, Boyce is overwhelmed with relief that the daily battle to keep their small son, Hardy, safe has been lifted from his shoulders.

His wife, Kris, dreads returning to the settlement where she was born and raised. Her mental powers make living among others difficult, even dangerous, but even she is unprepared for the catastrophic events that follows.
Safety comes at a price.

Once again, I demonstrated my shallowness by stopping to give this one a closer look based on the cover. And then I read the blurb and decided it sounded like a lot of fun. An angry pirate, a disorientated mage and powerful, magical creatures with a very different sense of priorities.

Of course grandparents know what’s best for their grandchildren – after all we’ve garnered hardwon experience and knowledge of what the world is about. However, their parents won’t see it that way and if you want to go on seeing the pesky lizards, you’d better forget those gobbets of wisdom you’re itching to share, if their parents think otherwise.

Review of NETGALLEY arc This Immortal Heart by Jennifer Saint

Greek myth retellings from a feminist viewpoint have been one of my favourite genres in recent years, leading to some outstanding reads. See my reviews of The Silence of the Girls and The Women of Troy by Pat Barker; The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller; and then there’s David Hair and Cath Mayo’s fabulous Olympus trilogy – Athena’s Champion, Oracle’s War and Sacred Bride. And perhaps my ultimate favourite, Claire North’s sublime Songs of Penelope trilogy – Ithaca, House of Odysseus and The Last Song of Penelope. So I was glad to get hold of Hera two years ago, which very much impressed me. And it was a no-brainer to request this arc with its beautiful cover featuring the adventures of Aphrodite – would it live up to a very high standard?
